 Benefits from project implementation

Project shall create preconditions for balanced development of Riga and its agglomeration, and will provide the following advantages:

  • traffic flows in Riga city will be optimised (providing time savings when crossing the city, lower transport running costs, higher traffic safety);
  • the quality of air in the historic part of Riga shall significantly improve;
  • noise pollution will be brought down, etc.

Project plays an equally important role in the Latvian and European context. It may also be considered national infrastructure object, since it will promote:

  • development of the Riga Freeport (cargo flow increase due to new connections to the port from national road network and other resulting economic benefits);
  • foreign investments (better infrastructure for building of manufacturing plants);
  • economic activity in general (business development will create more jobs and generate additional tax revenues).

Environmental benefits:

  • reduction of air pollution due to less congestion in traffic flows;
  • better air quality, less noise and vibration in the centre of Riga.

Transport benefits:

  • traffic flows (especially transit cargoes) will be diverted from the overcrowded central streets;
  • quicker crossing of the river in the Northern part of the city;
  • better and more convenient access to Riga Freeport;
  • higher capacity of street network throughout Riga;
  • safer traffic due to modern construction approaches and less intensive traffic in the city centre.

Urban planning benefits:

  • new, important element in the urban planning structure shall promote more rational use of land and support development of areas along the corridor, especially on junctions;
  • new network elements in the Northern part of the city will help overcame the present problem of fragmented hierarchical system of city streets.

Moving of the transit traffic away from the central part of the city will give opportunity to develop historic centre into a friendly urban environment and will provide for better development of the waterfront.
